Fortnite NPCs are getting AI voices before creator conversations arrive
Epic Games has prepared voices and personas for 36 original Fortnite characters ahead of the feature's July 30 rollout.

Epic Games is preparing Fortnite for a new kind of NPC interaction. The company has added AI-generated voices and fixed personas to 36 existing original Fortnite characters, with the changes applying when those characters appear as NPCs.
The voices are being prepared for Fortnite’s upcoming conversations feature. Epic plans to move the tool beyond its experimental phase and make it available to creators on July 30, 2026.
Once the feature launches, creators building Fortnite islands will be able to add AI-powered NPCs that hold real-time conversations with players. The system will use Google’s Gemini AI, allowing creators to define a character’s personality, knowledge, behavior, and voice through prompts instead of writing every line of dialogue by hand.
Which Fortnite characters are included?
The first group includes original Fortnite characters such as Fishstick, Haylee Skye, Cuddle Team Leader, and The Imagined. Epic has preconfigured their voices and personas so they respond in ways that fit their established identities when creators use them in their islands.
Epic said the AI voices were built from performances by independent professional actors who agreed to let their work be used to develop voice models for developer-made islands. The company also said it plans to speak with relevant guilds and actors who previously performed voices for Fortnite Battle Royale about bringing those original performances to more parts of the game.
That wording leaves an open question about whether the independent actors involved are members of SAG-AFTRA or another performers’ union. Epic’s earlier experiment with a Darth Vader chatbot showed how quickly AI character voices can become controversial. Players found ways to push the chatbot into inappropriate responses, including swearing, as Wired reported at the time.
Fortnite creators will be able to begin using the prepared AI voices on July 30. More characters may receive voices and personas after the initial group.
Fortnite’s AI NPC plans raise plenty of questions about voice acting and creator freedom, so share your thoughts in the comments and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, and Instagram.
