Space Dragons Turns a Classic Shoot ‘Em Up Into a Build-Crafting Xbox Run

The side-scrolling shooter arrived on Xbox on July 13 with five playable characters, 11 stages, local multiplayer, and transforming bosses.

Space Dragons arrived on Xbox on July 13, 2026, bringing a colorful side-scrolling shoot ’em up with upgrade paths, secret achievements, local multiplayer, and bosses that change form during battle. The game sends players into a war against alien forces taking control of Earth’s weapons and military technology.

A new Xbox Wire feature on Space Dragons highlights how the game mixes retro arcade action with character builds and a story filled with hidden details. Some stages include references to Neon Genesis Evangelion, adding a psychological angle to the conflict and the motivations of its pilots.

From classic shooting to bullet hell

The action begins in familiar shoot ’em up territory, but the challenge rises as enemy waves become denser and bullet patterns become harder to read. Boss fights can last for a while, and each major enemy changes once its health reaches certain thresholds. The Space Dragon, the final boss, has several forms, including hidden and symbolic transformations.

Players can choose from five characters, each with different abilities. Finishing a stage grants upgrades that can push a ship toward heavier offense or stronger defenses. Combining those upgrades with different weapons gives every run a slightly different rhythm. Going all-in on damage may clear enemies faster, but it also leaves less room for mistakes.

Routes, executions, and secret achievements

Route planning matters just as much as firing. Some paths make it easier to avoid incoming attacks, while other moments reward staying in the center or moving toward the edge of the screen. Learning enemy patterns, projectile speed, and attack timing can help players finish stages with less damage.

Executions are another key tool. Using them against regular enemies and bosses can grant bonus health and score points, while the animation provides a short period of invulnerability. Ignoring that mechanic or entering later stages without the right upgrades can make the game much tougher than it needs to be.

Secret achievements require a strong grasp of those systems. They are hidden behind demanding play, careful movement, and a close look at each level’s details. For players who enjoy chasing every secret, the game offers plenty of reasons to replay its stages.

A strange war with a bigger story

The pilots serve in the New Hope Battalion. Each is a young recruit from a different race or culture, selected for exceptional skill behind the controls of the fleet’s most powerful ships. The game also scatters pieces of its lore through alien creatures, ruined environments, and the presence of a distant hive mind.

One major reveal centers on a mysterious pilot who is eventually revealed to be the Space Dragon itself. That figure communicates telepathically with other characters and becomes central to the conflict. Different pilots, weapons, and upgrade choices can also change how each playthrough feels.

Space Dragons includes 11 stages, 11 boss encounters, hand-drawn pixel-art characters and environments, a large weapon selection, cumulative stage upgrades, and local multiplayer. Its retro influences include Galaga, Phoenix, and Aero Fighters, but its mix of character abilities, branching routes, and upgrade combinations gives the formula its own flavor. The game is available through the Xbox store page for Space Dragons.
