Project Zomboid’s next big update is in testing, and Stable is the real prize

The Indie Stone said Build 42.20 is targeting a late-summer release, will not accept 42.19 saves, and will eventually become the default Steam launch option.

In a July 9 Steam post, The Indie Stone laid out what comes next for Project Zomboid, and the headline item is simple enough: Build 42.20 is in testing now.

The studio said 42.20 is aiming for a release later this summer. It is also the build candidate for the Stable branch, which means it will become the default launch option on Steam when it lands. There is a tradeoff, though. Because the update brings a large content pass, 42.19 save files will not transfer to 42.20. Players who want to stay on the older version will still have the outdatedunstable branch available.

What comes after Stable

Once 42.20 is out and any needed hotfixes are done, The Indie Stone plans to move into another patch focused on tweaks and balance changes shaped by player feedback, with the late game getting most of that attention. After that, the studio wants to release its mapping tools, including WorldZed, TileZed, and AnimZed, so modders will have a steadier base to work from and a better in-house animation toolset.

Localization is still rolling as well. The team said more than 1.3 million words have been translated into 29 languages since June, and it is still looking for volunteers in Danish, Dutch, Korean, Greek, Norwegian, Polish, and Portuguese (PT-PT). Looking further out, The Indie Stone said it is working through the rest of 2026 on a Build 42 support update focused on optimization, extra modding support, and player-requested features and polish that did not make the Stable cutoff.

More Project Zomboid notes

The official Project Zomboid Map Project has also been updated under Calvy’s stewardship and now supports B41, B42, and legacy versions. The studio also said writer Pat Brennan, known in the post as Brat Pen, is stepping away from the project on a full-time basis, and it is opening a new channel for medium to large server providers who want to give feedback on hosting.
