
Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred is only a few hours away, and the expansion is bringing far more than a pair of class additions. Blizzard is lining up new systems, returning mechanics, and broad class changes that will touch almost every part of the game.
The wider run-up to Diablo 4’s next round of changes is still moving too, with more developer interviews scheduled in Diablo 4 prepares for big changes.
Two new classes are joining the fight
Lord of Hatred will add both the Paladin and the Warlock. Players who preordered the expansion already have access to the Paladin, though the class still looks like it will receive skill and ability adjustments alongside the expansion’s new talent system.
The Warlock is also stepping into Diablo 4 for the first time and becomes the game’s second Willpower class after the Druid. That matters because it gives the class pool a very different kind of caster option to build around.
A full skill tree pass is coming for every class
One of the biggest changes in the expansion is a full skill tree rebuild for every class. The new layout gives players more ways to branch into different effects, and some skills can now be altered in ways that were not possible before. A Sorcerer, for example, can turn Charged Bolts into a Fire skill.
The Druid and Necromancer appear to be getting the largest shake-up, which should matter for players who have already settled into a favorite build and want a reason to revisit it.
War Plans will let players map out endgame routes
War Plans are a new way to line up endgame activity. Instead of running content one piece at a time, players will be able to chain activities together, focus on one area like Helltides, or string multiple modes into a single route that ends with a Pit boss.
The system also grows stronger the more it is used. More interaction means more modifiers, from simple loot and reward tweaks to stranger changes like The Butcher appearing as a Pit Guardian.
Talismans, Charms, and the Horadric Cube are back
Lord of Hatred is also bringing back familiar systems from earlier Diablo games. Talismans return with set bonuses that can be mixed and matched through 2-piece, 3-piece, and 5-piece options. Charms slot into those Talismans and can be set, Unique, or Regular, which gives the system a layer that will feel familiar to players who liked older item setups.
The Horadric Cube is returning as another gear tool. It will let players reroll affixes, upgrade items, and even convert Uniques into Charms for Talismans. That alone should cut down some of the gear grind and make item hunting a little less punishing.
New endgame, free loot filtering, and fishing
Echoing Hatred is the new endless endgame mode on the way. It works a bit like Infernal Hordes, but the enemies keep coming in randomized waves that grow harder the longer a run lasts. Older bosses can also show up to interrupt the action, and one death ends the attempt.
A loot filter is finally on the way as well, and it will be available to everyone, not just expansion owners. Players will be able to hide the drops they do not want to see, which should help clean up the screen during busy fights.
Fishing is joining the game too. It is a more relaxed activity, but it still feeds into progression by handing out crafting materials and certain items that only come from fishing.
Gem changes and quality-of-life updates
Gems are also getting a redesign. The new version gives them multiplicative damage bonuses tied to specific damage types. Diamond now scales All Damage, while Topaz shifts to Lightning Damage.
The rest of the quality-of-life package is broad as well:
- New map overlay
- Level cap increases from 60 to 70
- Improved pathfinding
- New enemy types
- 12 new Torment difficulties
- New enemy affixes
- Gear now has stat multipliers
- Pit overhaul
- Stash upgrades
- Uniques and Mythic items can now be tempered
The full list makes Lord of Hatred look less like a small expansion and more like a major systems pass for Diablo 4. Players should have plenty to test once the update lands.
