A new video game based on Friday the 13th is currently in development, according to an announcement made at San Diego Comic-Con. Fans of the franchise might be curious about what this sequel game could bring, especially since the previous multiplayer title was delisted not long ago.
Robert Barsamian, executive vice president at Horror Inc, which manages the Friday the 13th intellectual property through the label Jason Universe, revealed during a panel that both a new sequel movie and a sequel game are priorities for the company. While no official release dates or detailed information were provided, Barsamian mentioned that these projects are actively being worked on.
He addressed the obvious gap in the franchise’s film history, noting that there hasn’t been a new Friday the 13th movie since a reboot 16 years ago. Barsamian said, “I can tell you that a new sequel movie and a new sequel game are at the top of our list.” He also added that they are in a position to deliver on these projects, though he stopped short of confirming specific details or timelines.
It remains unclear whether this sequel game will directly follow 2017’s Friday the 13th: The Game, an asymmetrical online multiplayer experience that was pulled from sale on December 31, 2023, after its license expired. Barsamian was credited as an executive producer on that title, but he did not specify whether the new game would continue its story or mechanics.
The mobile game Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle was also delisted earlier in 2023 due to licensing issues, which seems that licensing has been a hurdle in keeping these games available, which may make you wonder how the new sequel game will handle such challenges.
Following the release of the 2017 game, developer IllFonic moved on to other licensed horror multiplayer games, includingPredator: Hunting Grounds, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game. Meanwhile, publisher Gun Media partnered with Sumo Nottingham for an asymmetrical multiplayer game based on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
Jason Universe, the enterprise behind the franchise’s current management, launched in May 2024 with the goal of bringing the iconic hockey-mask-wearing villain, Jason Voorhees, into new projects across entertainment, games, merchandise, and more. They invited fans to stay tuned for updates on fresh experiences starring Jason.
Details are missing, but this announcement offers hope for fans who have been waiting for new Friday the 13th content. Will the sequel game capture the same eerie tension and multiplayer fun as before? Feel free to share your thoughts about what you’d like to see in the new Friday the 13th game in the comments below.
