The team at Pocketpair has found themselves in a whirlwind of legal trouble after being hit with a patent infringement lawsuit from none other than Nintendo. This unexpected turn of events has left many wondering how it will affect the future of this interesting game.

During a panel at GDC 2025, John ‘Bucky’ Buckley, Pocketpair’s communications director and publishing manager, shared his thoughts on the situation. He described how they were caught off guard by the lawsuit, referring to it as “a little thing that happened in September” when they learned that a company had decided to pursue legal action against them. While Bucky was cautious about discussing specifics due to the ongoing nature of the case, he did mention feeling blindsided since they had received positive feedback regarding all necessary legal checks prior to launching Palworld.

Bucky expressed that this development was something they never planned. It was particularly disheartening for them because they’ve been quite vocal about their project leading up to its release. The day news broke about the lawsuit felt like “a pretty depressing day,” especially considering how much everyone at Pocketpair admires Nintendo’s work. They were also preparing for an interesting PlayStation launch and showcasing their game at Tokyo Game Show—plans which now face complications due to these legal hurdles.

The situation is further complicated by Nintendo acquiring a new patent related to their claims against Palworld. this development, Pocketpair has cautioned fans not to expect more content or updates regarding Palworld, leaving many players anxious about what lies ahead for this interesting title.

How do you feel about Pocketpair’s reaction? What implications might this have on both companies moving forward?
