CD Projekt, the renowned video game developer and publisher, recently announced a major milestone for their popular title, Cyberpunk 2077. The game’s first and only expansion, Phantom Liberty, has achieved remarkable sales, crossing 4.3 million units in just two months since its release.
Phantom Liberty, released on September 26 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, has been a significant contributor to the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. In its first week alone, the expansion sold an impressive three million copies, indicating strong player interest and engagement.
Adam Kiciński, CEO of CD Projekt, expressed his satisfaction with the expansion’s performance. “The successful release of Phantom Liberty, combined with the comprehensive Update 2.0, has notably elevated the gameplay experience in Night City, setting a new standard of quality,” Kiciński stated. He emphasized the importance of this achievement in the context of the company’s plans to continue developing the Cyberpunk franchise.
Interestingly, Kiciński revealed last month that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold over 25 million copies since its initial release in December 2020. This sales pace is significantly quicker than that of CD Projekt’s other hit game, The Witcher 3, which has sold over 50 million copies since its 2015 release.
Adding to the excitement, CD Projekt recently unveiled the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition. This comprehensive package includes both the base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion. It is scheduled for release on December 5 in select markets, available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, both digitally and physically.
Despite the success of Phantom Liberty, Gabe Amatangelo, the game director for Cyberpunk 2077, indicated that the studio’s focus is shifting. No more major updates are planned for the game as the team is now directing its attention to other projects. This includes the eagerly awaited sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, which is currently in development at CD Projekt’s North American studios.
