Xbox is beginning a test that lets Xbox Insiders stream selected games from their libraries for free with advertising. The trial started on July 23, 2026, and is limited to supported devices and regions. Microsoft’s announcement says participants will need an Xbox account and will receive sessions lasting up to one hour.
An advertisement will play before each session begins. Once the game starts, the core gameplay experience will remain unchanged, and players can use another way to play whenever they choose.
What Xbox’s Ad-Supported Test Includes
- Free streaming for selected games that participants own
- Ads shown before a session starts
- One-hour session limits
- Availability that varies by supported device and region
- An optional way to play that does not replace existing options
The test also highlights how cloud gaming can help Xbox One owners access newer games made for Xbox Series X|S without buying new hardware immediately. Xbox said this could offer another route to play in areas where consoles are difficult to find or cost more than some players can afford.
Xbox Wants Ads to Stay Out of Gameplay
Xbox said its approach will focus on keeping advertising separate from active play. The company plans to put players first, avoid interrupting gameplay, identify ads clearly, hold them to the same quality standards as its own content, and match them to expectations for each platform.
The test is also meant to gather feedback. Xbox said it will review how players use the feature and adjust the service based on that feedback, with the goal of offering a lower-cost way for more people to play.
How to Join the Xbox Insider Program
Players who want to take part in future Xbox tests can find the Xbox Insider Program details through official support. The Xbox Insider Hub is available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC.
Xbox Insiders can also share feedback through Xbox Player Voice. Availability for this ad-supported streaming test remains limited to the supported devices, regions, and games included by Xbox.
