World War 3 Has Gone Offline After Eight Years of Service
The free-to-play tactical shooter lost support after its player count fell from nearly 12,000 at launch to double digits before the shutdown.
World War 3 has been taken offline globally after roughly eight years of availability. New Generation Games and Wishlist Games ended support for the free-to-play tactical shooter on August 3, 2026, leaving it unplayable.
The shutdown followed an announcement shared on Steam two months earlier. In the Steam announcement, the developers said they had decided to end support and close the game’s servers after considering the future of the project.
“The World War 3 servers will be taken offline on 3 August 2026. After this date, the game will no longer be playable.”
World War 3 Struggled to Keep Its Player Base
World War 3 first entered early access in 2018 before reaching full launch in 2022. The tactical multiplayer shooter never became a major hit, but it did build a community around its large-scale battles and free-to-play model.
Its Steam peak came in 2022 at just under 12,000 concurrent players. For almost two years afterward, the game rarely climbed above 300 players at once. In the final hours before the servers closed, its population had fallen to double digits.
Players reacted to the closure in different ways. Some remembered the game’s potential and the time they spent with it, while others pointed to delayed updates and the shrinking player base as reasons it failed to last. One recurring sentiment was that the project had been left with too much unfinished work despite surviving for several years.
Because World War 3 required an online connection, the server closure also removed access to the game itself. Players can no longer launch it for its multiplayer matches now that the global shutdown has taken effect.
