World of Warcraft: Forever launch notes detail class and controller changes ahead of release

Warrior defensive stance threat climbs from 30% to 80%, Druid bear form from 50% to 115%, and Rogues gain a new ability as higher-level creatures receive more health.

World of Warcraft: Forever’s launch update covers class and race changes, controller support, and bug fixes. The game is scheduled to launch on Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. PST, or 11 p.m. GMT.

Controller support has reached a functional state for major gameplay and core interface tasks, including movement, spells, interactions, and menu navigation. It remains a PC feature, not an announcement of a console version.

The Gamepad (Alpha) option appeared during the beta. Triggers and bumpers change the available combat actions, while holding the right analog stick opens a party ping menu.

Class changes and fixes for launch

Blizzard’s November 2 development notes describe changes across the game’s classes and races. The goal is to give each class strengths that make it useful to a group, rather than make every class numerically equal.

Keeping class power near Classic’s budget has involved tradeoffs. Blizzard says some new additions came at the expense of existing abilities, leaving signature skills underpowered and narrowing other design options. Over the past two weeks, the team raised damage across classes and increased the health of higher-level creatures, creating more room to tune the results.

Tank threat receives a direct adjustment. Warrior defensive stance threat rises from 30% to 80%, while Druid bear form threat increases from 50% to 115%. Paladins also receive threat-generation buffs. The changes offset the removal of Blessing of Salvation, placing more of the threat responsibility on tanks rather than relying on a spell from another class.

Rogues gain Shank, an off-hand energy-generation tool with a different effect for each specialization. Combat Rogues gain more energy, Subtlety Rogues can earn extra combo points, and Assassination Rogues can weaken enemies so they become more vulnerable to poisons. The notes also include Druid buffs and new passive abilities, alongside changes for other classes.

Some of the latest work revisits choices that leaned too quickly on solutions from Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King, rather than designs suited to Forever’s combat model. Blizzard does not plan major balance changes before raids open in December, except to address bugs or serious outliers. Once enough players have progressed beyond level 30 and tried a range of content, the team expects a broader tuning pass based on player data. Class design will continue to evolve over the months and years after launch.

The notes also include a fix for an issue that repeatedly left Huey Sunnydale’s legs unrendered, along with adjustments to human death sounds.

More than 8 million characters were created during the beta. Forever will be a third ongoing version of World of Warcraft alongside retail and Classic, included in the existing subscription without an additional purchase.
