The Semper Fidelis event, which started today, features the experimental American EFV as the main ground vehicle reward: a Rank VI light tank that pairs a 30 mm Bushmaster cannon with rare amphibious capabilities, making it particularly suitable for maps with rivers or coastal approaches.

The EFV is described as a large, three-crew vehicle equipped with a thermal imager, a robust fire control suite, and the ability to transition into amphibious mode, allowing it to move like a boat.

What the EFV is, and why it matters

The EFV, short for Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, is an event vehicle at Rank VI for the USA. At a glance it comes with:

  • 30 mm Bushmaster autocannon and a coaxial machine gun.
  • Thermal imager and a laser rangefinder for aided targeting.
  • Outstanding water speed for a ground vehicle, thanks to deployable shields and water jets.
  • Large internal volume with a landing compartment and a crew of three.

EFV side view

Historically, the EFV evolved from the AAAV program that began in the 1980s to enable over‑the‑horizon landings. General Dynamics’ prototype testing in the early 2000s showed the concept could hit amphibious speeds around 46 km/h. The program was redesignated EFV in 2003, but development eventually ceased in January 2011 for cost reasons, after 19 prototypes were built.

In‑game performance and loadout

In War Thunder the EFV retains the familiar 30 mm Bushmaster ballistics many ground players will recognize. It ships with an APDS belt by default, and can unlock a HEI‑T belt for anti‑air roles and an APFSDS belt aimed at heavy tanks. The vehicle also has a modern fire control system that includes a laser rangefinder and a thermal imager, which should help when engaging both ground and low‑flying targets.

Despite its size, the EFV cruises at up to 72 km/h on good roads. Its amphibious capability is a highlight, it unfolds shields, tightens tracks, and activates water jets to reach about 46 km/h on water. That water speed is the kind of detail that opens new tactical options on maps with rivers or coastal sectors.

Gaijin notes this is an event vehicle and that its characteristics may change before it is added to the main game. For the full event details, see the Semper Fidelis event page.

Please note that this vehicle’s characteristics may be changed before it is added to the game.

This addition will matter most to players who enjoy mobility and amphibious tactics, or who like vehicles with flexible ammunition options. Tell us what you think in the comments, and follow us on X and Bluesky.
