VRChat is changing how its age checks and content gates work
The company said the UK will get the first Age Assurance rollout, with content gating and a separate July update on public-instance toxicity coming later.

VRChat is reshaping its safety language around age assurance, and the first users to see it will be in the United Kingdom. The company said the broader system replaces the narrower age-verification framing and should be treated as a toolkit, not a single check. The move also lands in the middle of the wider UK push for age checks that has already reached Steam age checks in the UK.
UK rollout, then the next step
VRChat said the UK rollout will happen in waves over a few months, and it plans to offer the process free at first while it learns what it costs to run at scale. Users who clear the check and are 18 or older will be marked as age verified inside the platform. The company also said people who subscribe to VRC+ for one month or more can use age assurance without keeping the subscription active afterward.
Content gating comes after that
Once age assurance is live, VRChat plans to turn on its next content-gating pass. For anyone who is not age verified or is determined to be under 18, the Sexually Suggestive filter will stay on and cannot be switched off. That content will be hidden behind a placeholder, and creators are being told to review uploads against the Creator Guidelines so their tags are correct.
More safety work is still coming
The company said it is not ready to give a wider launch date, and it wants the UK test to prove the safeguards first. VRChat also said it is working on Age Assured Groups, where joining would require age assurance at 18 or older, and that it will publish a separate post in July about an experiment aimed at toxicity and bad behavior in public instances. It also linked readers to its December 2025 trust and safety post for more background.
VRChat is taking its time with this rollout, and the UK will be the test case for now. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
