The Witcher 3’s 2027 DLC Will Put Geralt’s Silver Chain Back in Action
CD Projekt Red's first gameplay footage shows Geralt using a chain weapon, while the 2027 expansion also makes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine free for base-game owners.
The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is bringing back one of Geralt’s most recognizable early weapons. CD Projekt Red’s first gameplay footage for the DLC, which is scheduled for 2027, shows the witcher wielding a silver chain once again.
The footage mixes story scenes with combat during a grim and bloody quest. It also reveals new enemy types and locations, offering a closer look at the world waiting in the upcoming expansion.
Geralt’s chain is more than a visual callback. He can use it to catch enemies from a distance and pull them toward him, adding a fierce new way to control a fight alongside his usual swordplay.
The weapon is a deep-cut callback to the opening cinematic of the original 2007 RPG. Geralt has rarely been seen using it since then, making its return in Songs of the Past an especially fun detail for longtime fans of the series.
The reference reaches beyond the games, too. Geralt also used a silver chain in The Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski, including during his fight with Adda after she was reborn as a striga. The DLC is therefore drawing from both the franchise’s first game and its literary roots.
Songs of the Past was one of several Witcher 3 announcements shown during the August 25 Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase. The presentation also featured The Witcher 3 Remastered, including improved visuals, combat adjustments, reworked skill trees, and other changes. Songs of the Past will also benefit from the gameplay upgrades coming with the remastered version.
CD Projekt Red is making both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine free for base-game owners. The two expansions remain some of the biggest additions to Geralt’s original adventure, giving players who missed them another reason to return before Songs of the Past arrives.
CD Projekt Red is also continuing work on the next mainline entry. The Witcher 4’s 2028 release window gives the wider series another long-term project, while Geralt’s next adventure keeps the focus on the character fans already know.
