TFT patch 17.3 pushes back on reroll boards and gives Morgana a tank role

Riot's latest balance pass buffs Shen, Sona, and several AP four-costs while trimming the strongest low-cost and reroll openings.

Riot Games’ Teamfight Tactics patch 17.3 is live, and it goes straight at the reroll-heavy setups that have been taking over the lobby. The update also gives Morgana a new identity as a four-cost Magic Tank, which should help her do more than just sit in the back and cast.

Riot’s official patch notes spread the changes across the set. Shen and Sona picked up buffs at the top end, while Briar, Twisted Fate, Teemo, Akali, Bel’Veth, Leona, and Jax were trimmed down. Diana and Miss Fortune got a boost for reroll players, Lulu was toned down, and several AP four-costs, including Aurelion Sol, Karma, Leblanc, and Nami, were given more power.

Morgana is the headline change. In 17.3, she became a four-cost tank instead of staying in a more familiar damage slot, and her Dark Form still damages the three nearest enemies while also healing the two most injured allies nearby. That gives frontline boards a sturdier option in a set that has been light on true tanky four-costs.

The patch also aims at the economy side of the game. Anima Squad now pays out loot after every combat instead of only after wins, Fountain Stargazer is back with max health restoration every two seconds for all units plus bonus AD and AP for Stargazers in the hexes, and Heart of the Swarm returned with a rework. Riot also added four new augments and changed certain encounter interactions so some of the nastier combo rolls, like double dupes into Heroic Grab Bag or Artifact Anvil into Forged in Strength, can no longer happen.

The broader goal is clear. Riot wants fewer games decided by low-cost reroll lines and more room for level 8 and level 9 boards to matter. The patch also weakens some of the most reliable early and midgame routes, which should make slower transitions a little less punishing if the numbers land the way Riot wants.
