StarCraft’s 2030 Open-World Shooter Gets First Trailer, Led by Dan Hay
Blizzard showed the project at BlizzCon 2026, but its planned 2030 release still has no more specific date.

StarCraft is leaving its real-time strategy roots behind for an open-world shooter, and Blizzard’s first trailer gives the project a distinctly personal view of that shift. The game is scheduled for 2030 and is led by former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay.
Blizzard revealed the project during its September 12, 2026 presentation at BlizzCon. An earlier BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony announcement established the 2030 window, while the trailer provides the first real sense of the project’s tone. Blizzard presented it simply as StarCraft and did not give the release a more specific date.
A Dominion soldier prepares for StarCraft’s next war
The cinematic follows a young, heavily armored soldier as he trains for ground combat. A voiceover delivers Dominion propaganda about humanity’s need to hold the line, turning the reveal into a recruitment message rather than a conventional showcase of factions or shooting mechanics.
By the end of the footage, the soldier appears to have died in battle. The sequence then urges the Dominion’s sons and daughters to carry the fallen forward regardless of the cost, giving StarCraft’s return a grim human angle before Blizzard confirms the 2030 release.
Blizzard’s first trailer is the clearest look at the project so far. It is cinematic rather than gameplay footage, and major systems remain under wraps.
Hay also offered a short but direct statement during the presentation. “We are here to make StarCraft, and it’s about damn time,” he said.
The release will mark the series’ first game since 2017’s StarCraft Remastered and its first all-new experience since 2016’s single-player DLC, StarCraft: Nova Covert Ops. Blizzard previously tried to move the franchise into shooter territory with StarCraft: Ghost, a canceled stealth shooter that was planned for PlayStation 2, the original Xbox and GameCube.
Blizzard has directed fans to the official StarCraft website for further updates. Until more footage or gameplay information arrives, Dan Hay’s involvement, the open-world format and the trailer’s focus on Dominion sacrifice are the main clues to how far this new entry will depart from the series’ familiar formula.
