StarCraft team stands behind its 2030 release date
Project lead Dan Hay says setting the date years before launch shows the team is confident in the open-world shooter's schedule.

StarCraft‘s new open-world shooter is scheduled for 2030, and project lead Dan Hay says the early date is a public commitment rather than a placeholder. The project is being led by Hay, the former Far Cry boss, alongside associate director AnaLee Haertling. The project had only just been introduced, with the first trailer focusing on a Dominion soldier’s training and apparent death rather than playable combat or the shooter’s core systems.
In an interview with GamesRadar after the reveal, Hay said the team had already been working on the project for some time and wanted to give the community an early look. Asked whether announcing the game so far ahead of launch was the right decision, he answered, “Absolutely.”
A 2030 target makes the announcement more of a long-term promise than an imminent release. The game is still early in development, but the team chose to attach a concrete year to it instead of waiting until it was closer to launch.
Hay presented that choice as evidence of the team’s intent. “That shows that we’re serious. That shows everyone that that’s a date that we feel really confident about,” he said. He also described 2030 as a number the team has put on the wall, keeping the eventual shipping question in front of everyone involved.
Beyond its open-world shooter format, the project still has plenty of time before its scheduled release. For now, the clearest message from the team is that 2030 is being treated as a date it plans to meet, not a vague window attached to an early announcement.
