Square Enix Says Kingdom Hearts Collection Art Was a Human Mistake, Not AI
The publisher said updated artwork has been added after players noticed inconsistent details in the original promotional image.
Square Enix has denied that the artwork for Kingdom Hearts Collection was created with generative AI, saying the strange visual details came from an artist’s mistake instead.
The collection will launch on October 8, 2026, bringing Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts 3 + Re Mind to Nintendo Switch 2. The bundle will also be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC.
Questions about the promotional image grew after players spotted several inconsistent details. Sora’s belt and shoes appeared to have irregular designs, while Donald Duck seemed to have four fingers on one hand and five on the other. Other versions of the artwork found on the Xbox Store showed Donald with four fingers on both hands, suggesting that the image had been corrected.
Square Enix addressed the criticism through a public relations representative, who told Gamespot: “We’re aware of feedback regarding recent Kingdom Hearts visuals. These assets were created by our development team without the use of generative AI, and the issues resulted from human error.”
The representative added that “quality is extremely important to us” and confirmed that updated assets had been added where needed.
The Switch 2 release will give players native versions of the games. The earlier Nintendo Switch versions were cloud editions because of the original system’s hardware limits. Players who purchased those cloud versions will be able to carry their save data into the Switch 2 editions.
Square Enix also showed new Kingdom Hearts 4 gameplay during the collection announcement and confirmed that the game will be available on Switch 2 on its launch day.
