Square Enix reports 90.11% digital game sales ahead of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation

The figure represents 6.65 million digital units out of 7.38 million total across North America, Europe, Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world.

Square Enix reported 6.65 million digital game units and 0.73 million packaged units out of 7.38 million total units sold worldwide in the company’s latest earnings presentation. That gives downloads a 90.11% share of its game sales, with the figure arriving as attention turns toward the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

The presentation breaks down units sold across Square Enix’s digital entertainment business, separating games sold as downloads from those sold in packaged form. The figures cover North America, Europe, Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world, giving the company a broad view of how its audience buys games.

Square Enix’s latest earnings presentation shows a clear lean toward digital purchases, but the number needs some context before it is treated as a direct measure of boxed game demand.

Availability plays a major role. Depending on where someone lives, finding a nearby store that sells games may be difficult, while buying through a digital storefront is often faster and simpler. PC players also frequently have no physical option for a new release, which naturally pushes their purchases into the digital column.

Square Enix has also released games that are only available digitally for now, including the HD remasters of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 on Nintendo Switch 2. Final Fantasy XIV adds another large online-heavy part of the company’s business, even though older versions of the MMO have also received packaged releases.

Digital totals can include more than a player buying a complete game. Downloadable content, subscriptions, microtransactions, and other online purchases can all make the digital side look much larger when compared with packaged units. That accounting approach is especially important for a publisher with a long-running online game such as Final Fantasy XIV.

The broader financial picture was strong as well. Square Enix’s latest quarterly results showed operating income rising 88.6%, while revenue from its video-game business increased 51.8%.

Physical games are not disappearing from the market overnight, but Square Enix’s figures show how much of the publisher’s sales activity now happens online. The data reflects both consumer habits and the way games are distributed, so it offers a useful snapshot without telling the entire story of physical game demand.
