Sony’s UBP-X700/K Has No New Shipments Planned

Sony's Japanese store lists the UBP-X700/K as out of stock with no further shipments planned, while Kunkoku dates its phaseout to Oct. 22.

Sony appears to be winding down its standalone UHD Blu-ray player business. The company’s Japanese online store lists the UBP-X700/K as out of stock with no further shipments planned. Sony retailer Kunkoku marks the UBP-X700 for discontinuation beginning Oct. 22.

Disc playback remains available through PS5 hardware. Disc-equipped PS5 consoles can play UHD Blu-ray movies, and Sony designed a detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for the PS5 Digital Edition. Sony has also said it will stop manufacturing PlayStation game discs in January 2028, a separate part of its move away from physical media, as covered in Sony’s plans for PlayStation game discs.

For people comparing standalone players, Amazon listings put the Sony UBP-X700U at $328 and the Panasonic UB420 at $299.99, down from $369.99, at the time of reporting. Panasonic’s HD-only DMP-BD84P was listed at $117.99. A PS5 Disc Edition at $649.99 costs more than twice as much as the UB420, so a dedicated player is the lower-cost choice when movie playback is the main priority.

Panasonic remains the only widely recognized consumer-electronics maker still making UHD Blu-ray players, though some Chinese companies are beginning to enter the market. Some UBP-X700/K units may remain available in Europe and the U.S., but further restocks appear unlikely.
