Developers posted Development Update #139 for SCUM, listing current tasks and upcoming changes – from time-limited quests and encounter tweaks to armor research and an inventory rework. This matters because those systems touch combat and survival core loops, and the update hints at fresh items, animations, and lots of bugfixing heading toward the game.
Programmers are in full patch-week mode. They are doing code reviews and task distribution, but the stuff players will see soon includes time-limited quests coming online and improvements to the encounter manager based on your feedback. There are new admin commands, tweaks to visuals for cuts and bruises, and metabolism work that will affect survival systems.
They also teased a few surprises that will appear this week. Work has started on an armor rework – research is underway to see what is possible – and the long-awaited inventory overhaul is getting more attention. And yes, there is still plenty of bugfixing.
Level design is hunting down spawner bugs and addressing the encounter reports players sent in. They are also standardizing spray painting textures so things run smoother and we can add improvements later. This is more on the technical side, but it should help performance.
Hard surface crew kept busy with new tomahawk axes – yes, axes, so no funny business. They are also giving some love to older firearms like the Thompson and the trench gun. Who doesn’t love a Thompson?
Soft surface work is progressing quietly – pretty much the same trajectory as last week, and you’ll see those changes soon.
2D artists are sketching new concept art and tweaking the UI after player feedback. Animation folks are neck-deep in bugfixes, crafting new trailers and adding animations for incoming features.
The sound team is working on wind effects and balancing audio levels so environments feel more alive. Small stuff, but it piles up when you notice it missing in a firefight.
Designers are writing GDDs for the armor rework, adjusting how new items behave, and tackling a hipfire rebalance that has been requested for a while. Kinda nice to see that on the docket.
