The long wait is over, SCUM has officially hit version 1.0! This update is a big deal because it completely reshapes the island you’ve been surviving on, adds new threats, and unlocks fresh gameplay options. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just curious about what’s new, there’s plenty to unpack here.
First, the island itself has been reworked, revamped, and optimized. The layout you know is still there, but everything feels different thanks to massive environmental upgrades: new greenery, a foliage system, a snow biome shoreline, and a brand-new wetness system that affects terrain and gear and even limits visibility when it rains. The terrain drying after rain is a subtle touch that looks way cooler than expected.
Thanks to improved streaming speeds and bug fixes, vehicles won’t randomly fall through terrain anymore, which is a relief if you’ve ever lost your ride mid-drive. Also, bunkers have expanded with secret versions requiring keycards. They’re safer but hold less loot, so don’t get too comfy farming them. The classic high-risk, high-reward AB bunkers have been reduced to keep that tension alive.
Here’s a twist: armed NPCs are now roaming the island. These enemies appear in different tiers with varying gear and will attack you on sight, adding a new layer of danger whether you’re playing solo, PvE, or PvP. Watching them battle puppets or struggle to survive themselves is kinda wild. It makes you keep your head on a swivel.
Returning vehicles include the modular Mariner seaplane and the Tractor, which can now be customized for more serious tasks. The Mariner is perfect for quick travel, landing on water or land, while the Tractor’s new configurations make it a surprisingly versatile ride.
One of the most fabulous additions is the ability to create your own quests for servers or single-player games. The devs have already released documentation and tools, so you can start crafting your survival stories immediately. If you like messing around with game settings, you’ll want to check that out.
Weaponry got some love, too. Expect fresh textures, smoother animations, and a new first-person camera angle that doesn’t block your view when holding weapons or other items. It’s a small change, but it improves the gameplay feel significantly.
For those just getting into SCUM, the update introduces new tutorials, a searchable codex, and better tips designed to help players get their bearings without watering down the challenge. Official beginner servers have been launched worldwide with adjusted settings, so if you’ve been hesitant to jump in, now’s a great time.
And here’s a huge one: server files are now available to everyone who owns the game. You can host your server with full customization and a new browser that supports filters and favorites. The devs even included setup documentation to help you get started.
