S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Shows the Ruins of Chornobyl’s Turbine Hall
The massive facility held two 500-megawatt turbines per power unit before the disaster left it burned, silent, and exposed to the Zone.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has turned its attention to the Turbine Hall, one of the largest and most damaged areas inside the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The latest Steam announcement details the facility’s role before and after the disaster.
The reactor explosion happened next to the hall, which left the enormous structure exposed to fire, debris, dust, and radiation. Stretching for more than 400 meters, the hall housed two turbines for each power unit. Every turbine was rated at 500 megawatts, and the machinery was so loud that speaking over it would have been pointless.
The space was built around constant motion. Pipes carried heat and steam, cranes moved overhead, and the floor shook under the force of the operating equipment. It was a working electricity plant rather than an abandoned industrial shell.
The night test that preceded the disaster focused on a turbogenerator. Operators wanted to find out whether its remaining rotation could keep the pumps running after external power was lost. The test did not go as planned, and the resulting catastrophe transformed the hall along with the rest of the plant.
Once the explosion occurred, the roof caught fire and the materials inside began burning. Oil, cables, and generators all added to the blaze. Personnel shut down the oil lines, changed the generators over to nitrogen, and extinguished the fires that could still be reached.
In the game, the hall is now a far quieter place. The turbines no longer move, the paint has begun to peel, and daylight falls through gaps in the roof. The setting gives the location a different kind of danger, with the vast room’s echo carrying through the abandoned machinery.
