S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will receive its first major expansion, Cost of Hope, alongside the free Back to the Zone — Update 2.0 on August 20, 2026. GSC Game World detailed the upcoming content, access rules, starting options, save compatibility, and mod guidance in its Steam announcement.
Cost of Hope adds two regions and a parallel story
Cost of Hope will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5|PS5 Pro. The expansion follows Skif through a new storyline that can take dozens of hours, with new and returning characters and two major regions: the Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Owners of the Ultimate Edition or Season Pass will receive access automatically. Players with the Standard or Deluxe Edition can upgrade to the Ultimate Edition, including its additional bonuses, or purchase the expansion separately.

How to start the Cost of Hope story
The expansion takes place alongside the events of the main campaign rather than after them. Once the DLC is installed, Skif will receive a signal on his PDA during the story, which starts the new questline.
Its content is split across two points in the campaign. The first part will become available shortly after leaving the Lesser Zone, while the second will unlock after completing the A Minor Incident main story mission.
Players who want to begin the DLC without replaying the opening can use the main-menu shortcut:
- Choose New Game → DLC Content → Skip Ahead to The Cost of Hope.
- Early Start moves the campaign to the point where the first DLC section becomes available.
- Advanced Start moves farther into the main story, making both DLC sections available.
- Advanced Start offers Advanced Start – Spark and Advanced Start – Ward. The choice applies to decisions in the base-game story and does not change the DLC content.
Advanced Start is the recommended choice for players focused on the expansion. Update 2.0 features will be available regardless of the starting option, and the open-world structure allows players to leave the DLC route and return to the wider Zone whenever they want.
Duty and Freedom face a fragile peace
The story centers partly on the uneasy relationship between Duty and Freedom. The two factions were enemies before the events of Heart of Chornobyl, but every group in the Zone signed the D4 Treaty before the game begins.
Duty sees the Zone as a threat to humanity and wants to destroy it. Freedom views the Zone as something humanity should study and use for the greater good. Their opposing beliefs continue to create tension despite the treaty, and GSC Game World has provided more background in its Duty and Freedom story post.
The Iron Forest and Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant await
Both new regions are larger territories rather than single missions or isolated rooms. Each will include its own hub, along with dozens of smaller locations containing quests, activities, dangers, and mysteries.
The expansion will also send players back to familiar places, including SIRCAA and the X-16 laboratory. Other locations will remain secret until players reach them.

Update 2.0 will be free for every edition
Back to the Zone — Update 2.0 will arrive at the same time as Cost of Hope on August 20, 2026. It will be free for all players, regardless of which edition they own.
The update includes deeper technical work, including an engine upgrade, alongside changes to the Zone’s presentation and systems. The announced additions include updated foliage and lighting, new weapons and attachments, binoculars, and a new custom difficulty option. GSC has outlined the main changes in its Update 2.0 feature breakdown.
Short and long patch notes will be published on August 20, 2026, through the developer’s website and the Steam page. Until then, the feature list above represents the main changes confirmed ahead of the update.

Existing saves will work with the expansion
Players will not need to begin a new game. Saves from earlier versions will remain compatible with both Update 2.0 and Cost of Hope.
Starting over is optional, although it may be worthwhile for anyone returning after a long absence. The game has received many new features during its update cycle, and a fresh playthrough offers a chance to see those changes from the beginning.
Remove outdated mods before updating
GSC recommends launching the game without mods installed when Update 2.0 and Cost of Hope become available. Mods that have not been updated may cause instability or performance problems.
The developer has given active modmakers early access through the Zone Kit Closed Beta so they can prepare their projects. Some mods may be updated on August 20, 2026, but players should confirm compatibility before reinstalling them. GSC’s mod and Zone Kit FAQ covers how to remove mods and prepare for the update.
