Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Will Take Sophia From Sunlit Shores to Melee Combat on August 27

Asobo Studio's lead producer Eric Chort detailed the game's dual-blade combat, health-recovery loop, grappling hook, and Greek mythology in an Xbox podcast interview.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will launch on August 27 with a much more combat-focused take on the series. The upcoming adventure follows Sophia, a character first introduced in A Plague Tale: Requiem, and sends her into a world of dual blades, mythological mysteries, and dangerous Mediterranean ruins.

In the latest Official Xbox Podcast conversation, Asobo Studio lead producer Eric Chort discussed how the team moved away from Hugo and Amicia’s story after roughly seven or eight years of work on their journey. Sophia quickly became the right choice for a new direction because she could carry a faster, more aggressive style of gameplay.

That decision gives the series a different center. Hugo and Amicia’s arc reached its conclusion, while Sophia’s separate story opens the door to new locations, new themes, and a more active protagonist.

Sophia’s combat is built around constant pressure

Unlike Amicia, who usually tried to avoid direct confrontations, Sophia enters fights with twin blades and a much more forceful approach. Asobo wanted every movement to feel responsive, from attacks and dodges to defensive actions, while giving Sophia enough speed to face groups of enemies on her own.

The combat also uses a sharp risk-and-reward loop. Sophia can defeat enemies quickly, but she can be defeated just as quickly. Blocking does not consume an endurance meter, yet staying defensive is not always the safest option. Every kill restores a health block, pushing players to return to the fight when they are hurt instead of waiting at a distance.

Her weapons are only part of the toolkit. Sophia can use a grappling hook to move around the battlefield, throw bottles at enemies, and rely on a dagger when she needs a faster or more precise attack. One skill-tree upgrade shown during the gameplay grants an effective invincibility frame during a fully charged critical hit, adding another layer to the timing behind each attack.

Asobo looked at several action games while developing the system, with Ghost of Tsushima serving as one of the team’s key references. Playtesting and repeated adjustments helped the studio find a rhythm that rewards aggression without making Sophia feel unstoppable.

A sunny Mediterranean world with a darker core

The early footage moves through Venice before pointing toward the Greek Isles, where the game’s mythology becomes more prominent. The imagery includes a minotaur, a labyrinth, and a glowing rope tied to the game’s logo, but Asobo is not simply recreating an ancient myth.

Instead, Greek mythology acts as a foundation for a story that mixes historical places with the studio’s own lore. Roman and Egyptian influences also informed the world, giving the team real cultural and architectural details to build around while reworking familiar ideas for Sophia’s journey.

That approach lets the game begin with bright water, open skies, and beautiful Mediterranean scenery before sending Sophia deeper into the island. The farther she travels, the more threatening the world becomes. Asobo described the change as a gradual movement from a welcoming surface toward something much darker underneath.

Why the game is called Resonance

The title arrived relatively late in development, but it fit two ideas the team already had in mind. “Resonance” can describe sound, and it can also describe an emotional connection. Both meanings play a role in the story, with sound becoming especially important as Sophia reaches the island’s darkest places.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Game Pass on August 27. The podcast episode also includes gameplay from approximately the opening hour, offering a closer look at Sophia’s combat and the world she is about to enter.
