Pokémon GO Will Add Private Max Battles and Trainer Backgrounds for Wild Area

New medal bonuses will reward Mighty Pokémon catches, while GO Safari Ball catches can now be transferred to Pokémon HOME.

Private Max Battle groups and Buddy Pokémon backgrounds are coming to Pokémon GO as GO Wild Area 2026 approaches. The first profile backgrounds will become available on November 6, alongside the start of the Sendai and Mexico City events.

The city events run from November 6 through November 8, followed by GO Wild Area: Global on November 14 and 15. Trainers also have new details on medal bonuses, avatar rewards and changes to Pokémon HOME transfers.

Buddy backgrounds arrive in stages

Trainers will be able to display their Buddy Pokémon’s Location Background or Special Background on their profiles, where friends can see it too. An October datamine had identified an eligibility flag for displaying Location Cards or Special Backgrounds on Trainer profiles.

Sendai and Mexico City GO Wild Area 2026 Location Backgrounds will become eligible for display at 10:00 a.m. local time on November 6. The GO Wild Area 2026 Special Background and all previously released Location Backgrounds will follow at 10:00 a.m. local time on November 9. More Special Backgrounds will be supported later.

The unlock follows each Trainer’s local time. Friends in another time zone won’t see a Buddy’s background until the feature has unlocked for them as well.

At the Sendai and Mexico City events, ticket holders will have a chance to receive a Location Background after catching a Pokémon from an event raid or Max Battle. Remote raids won’t qualify. Completing event-exclusive Special Research will also reward an encounter with Duraludon carrying a Location Background.

Private groups and lobby effects

Max Battle participants will have a choice between the regular Battle option, which automatically matches them with other players, and Private Group, which lets them enter a code to join an existing private group. The option arrives alongside event appearances from Dynamax Dialga, Dynamax Palkia and Gigantamax Duraludon.

Starting with Into the Wild, Trainers will also be able to activate select Adventure Effects from Raid and Max Battle lobbies. Supported effects include Crowned Sword Zacian’s Behemoth Blade and Crowned Shield Zamazenta’s Behemoth Bash. Ticket holders at the Sendai and Mexico City events will receive early access to the lobby feature.

Medals add rewards for Mighty Pokémon catches

Global ticket holders will receive branching Special Research beginning at 10:00 a.m. local time on November 14. The Steel-type path awards the Steel Scholar medal, while the Dragon-type path awards Dragon Defender.

Once claimed, each medal grants 1,000 extra Stardust for catching a Mighty Pokémon of its corresponding type. Trainers at level 31 or higher also receive 1 additional Candy XL for those catches. Choosing a path alone does not activate the bonuses.

Ticket holders attending Sendai or Mexico City will have an opportunity to earn both medals through their in-person event Special Research. Both medal bonuses expire when the Global event ends at 6:00 p.m. local time on November 15.

Avatar rewards and Pokémon HOME transfers

GO Pass: Into the Wild will offer a GO Wild Area 2026 Tee (Purple) as a free reward and Duraludon Pants through the paid GO Pass Deluxe. The pass runs from 10:00 a.m. local time on November 9 until 6:00 p.m. local time on November 15. Unlocked rewards can be claimed until 11:59 p.m. local time on November 17.

The Duraludon Helmet, Gigantamax Duraludon Backpack and Fighting-Type Jacket will be available to purchase in the in-game shop and will remain there after GO Wild Area ends. Ticket holders who complete event Special Research at an in-person event or during Global will also receive an exclusive avatar pose.

Collectors can now transfer Pokémon caught in GO Safari Balls to Pokémon HOME. Once transferred, the GO Safari Ball appears there as a Strange Ball.

For attendees planning their routes, the official experience pages include event maps for Sendai • Tohoku and Mexico City. Eligible attendees can also purchase add-ons offering extra gameplay days, bonuses and merchandise preorder options, with gameplay bonuses active from November 6 through November 8.
