Playden Runs Steam Games Locally on Jailbroken PS5 Consoles, but It’s Still Early

Playden packages each title as a separate PS5 app and can import Windows game folders, but its Portal demo exposed limits with mouse and menu controls.

Playden lets owners of jailbroken PS5 consoles run supported Steam games locally, but its early-alpha status keeps the project firmly in experimental territory. The launcher became publicly available earlier this month and builds a private Windows environment through prospero-win, a PlayStation 5 port of Wine.

Its translation layers support Direct3D 11 through DXVK and Direct3D 12 through VKD3D-Proton, alongside a graphics-driver runtime kit. Each game gets a separate PS5 app and home-screen tile, with its own files and settings.

Playden can sign in to Steam by QR code or by entering an account name and password. Users can browse their library, queue downloads, and read and write Steam Cloud saves. Downloaded Steam games use the user’s licenses.

The launcher also offers settings for graphics, frame rate, resolution, controller mapping, and launch behavior. Its input support includes XInput, DirectInput, Raw Input, Windows.Gaming.Input, and the Windows multimedia joystick API, with rumble. Games recognize the DualSense as an Xbox controller, and Playden supports connecting a mouse and keyboard.

The compatibility list includes Portal and Left 4 Dead 2, though the shared demonstration covers Portal alone. Basic controls worked, but the tester could not use a mouse cursor or press ESC to open the options menu.

Steam is not required to import existing Windows game folders. Playden can load them from a USB drive or M.2 SSD, or transfer them over FTP. The project page also lists plans for Steam game updates, support for GOG and Epic, Rockstar, EA, and Ubisoft launchers, and community recipes in the preset chooser.

Setup is involved, and crashes are possible. Using Playden with Steam also means signing in to an account through a third-party client. Its developers warn that Valve does not support third-party clients, say they know of no account problems, and leave the risk to users. The project’s README outlines that warning.
