Overwatch 2 has hit a pretty rough patch. The game’s concurrent player peak on Steam dropped to its lowest since launch, which is kinda shocking given how popular it was at first. Season 17’s launch hasn’t grabbed attention like previous ones, and that’s showing in the numbers.
SteamDB reports that on July 28th, 2025, Overwatch 2’s peak concurrent players on Steam fell to 24,414. To put that in perspective, the game once peaked at over 75,000 players simultaneously. Yikes, right?
Season 17’s numbers are way behind Season 15 and 16, which peaked at 59,332 and 60,127 players, respectively. Season 15 brought the Hero Perk system and a new hero, Freja, which gave players something fresh to get hyped about. The new Season 16 launched Stadium mode, letting players craft distinct gameplay styles. Pretty cool stuff.
But Season 17? Map voting was added, but it didn’t shake things up enough to excite the community. The meta might be another reason folks are stepping away. Some heroes like Freja and the buffed Tracer deal huge damage with little counter-play, making matches frustrating. Lucio and Kiriko offer incredible mobility and survivability, while tanks like Zarya and Ramattra can make games feel a bit rough.
Speaking of bans, some heroes are banned so often that they dominate competitive play. Sombra, Zarya, and Doomfist (who was recently disabled due to an overpowered bug) top the list. These balance issues might be turning players off, especially if matches feel unfair or repetitive.
Season 17 is currently somewhat stagnant, but improvements are expected. The Mid-Season update will bring new features like map reworks, competitive drives, and hero trials for the upcoming Season 18 hero, Wuyang.
I must say that Steam numbers don’t tell the whole story. Overwatch 2 has a solid player base on Battle.net, which is not included in the Steam statistics. Interestingly, the esports scene is talking with excitement. The Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS) is wrapping up Stage 2, and fans are looking forward to the Mid-Season Championship at the Esports World Cup. Could this competitive spotlight help bring players back? Time will tell.
