Onimusha: Way of the Sword Runs on Steam Deck, but 30 FPS Is the Real Target
Medium textures, 1280 x 800 resolution, and disabled upscaling produce a cleaner image without giving up the 30 FPS lock.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword lands in a useful middle ground on Steam Deck. It is not an effortless 60 FPS showcase, but it can maintain a comfortable 30 FPS target through the early hours, including the demanding Kyoto hub area.
PC Gamer’s hands-on test found a 30-40 FPS experience in typical play. Corridor sections with FSR 3.1.4 upscaling enabled could climb into the 50s and 60s, but heavier fights brought performance back into the 30s. The practical answer was to lock the game at 30 FPS instead of chasing unstable highs.
Steam Deck settings that improve the picture
Onimusha starts with every graphics option at its lowest setting. That baseline is not disastrous on the handheld’s small display, and Musashi Miyamoto remains detailed, with his flowing cloak retaining its cloth simulation. Medium textures are the first adjustment worth making because they reduce blur on prominent world objects.
- Texture quality: Medium
- Upscaling: Off
- Resolution: 1280 x 800
- Frame rate: 30 FPS

FSR is the main trade-off. FSR 3.1.4 can help the game reach 40 FPS more often, but ghosting around moving objects, especially Musashi’s hair, makes the image look worse. Turning upscaling off costs some frames, yet the 30 FPS lock keeps the result consistent and avoids that distracting effect.
After roughly six hours of play, Rasho-gan provided a useful stress test as the first genuinely challenging boss. The fight worked on Deck, and repeating it on an RTX 5090 PC delivered a prettier image without an obvious combat advantage in the comparison.
That puts Onimusha in a better place on Valve’s handheld than Monster Hunter Wilds or Dragon’s Dogma 2, even if it does not reach the unusually strong performance seen with Resident Evil Requiem. The game is not a reason to choose handheld play over a powerful desktop when both are available. It is a practical option for taking Musashi’s fight against Genma on the road, provided 30 FPS is acceptable.
