The Nintendo Switch has officially done the unthinkable. It just passed the legendary PlayStation 2 in total sales in the United States! Who didn’t grow up dreaming of having a console that could dethrone such an iconic piece of gaming history?
According to fresh data from Circana, our beloved Switch has hit a whopping 46.6 million units sold since its launch back in 2017. It’s left the PS2 in its dust on home turf! The handheld-only Nintendo DS is the only system that has managed to outsell it so far. Talk about a wild ride!
This monumental milestone was expected for a while now, like waiting for your pizza delivery and knowing it’s going to be late but still being excited when it finally shows up at your door. In June, Circana’s data showed that our little hybrid friend was trailing by just 1.1 million units behind Sony’s best-selling console.
But globally? Well, that’s another story entirely. At last count (September 30), the Switch had sold around 146.4 million units worldwide. It still has quite a journey ahead if it hopes to catch up with those staggering PS2 numbers, which are about 14 million short. Catching up might be tricky, with whispers about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 hitting shelves soon.
So, what do you think about this epic moment where Nintendo takes the crown for U.S. sales? Did you see this coming?
