Modern Warfare 4 Will Make Double XP Tokens Count Only During Matches

Players can carry existing 2XP Tokens from Black Ops 7 into Modern Warfare 4, where the boost will only run during active matches.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will stop Double XP tokens from draining while players wait in lobbies or move through the downtime between matches. The revised timer will run only during active match time, and the change is scheduled to begin with the game’s October 23, 2026 launch.

Historically, Call of Duty’s timer kept running in lobbies and during the transition between matches. A 30-minute token could lose part of its duration before a player returned to a match, even though that waiting time produced no XP.

Call of Duty confirmed the change on Sept. 28, saying tokens will count down in game time. A 30-minute token begins counting when a match starts. Once that match ends, any remaining time pauses until the player enters another match, so matchmaking, post-match menus, and loadout adjustments no longer consume the boost.

Existing 2XP Tokens from Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will also work in Modern Warfare 4. Players planning to move into the upcoming shooter can save those tokens for launch instead of spending them before then.

Tokens are commonly earned through challenges across Call of Duty modes and through Battle Passes, which makes the match-only timer more useful in practice. A connection issue, an unexpected interruption, or a long loadout session will no longer burn through time simply because the player is between matches.

Players can activate a token without guessing how much of its duration will survive the gaps between games.
