If you’ve been following the Metro series, you know it’s always had that gritty vibe. But guess what? The next installment is about to get even more intense. With everything happening in Ukraine, 4A Games has decided to take the story into darker territory, like, really dark!
Not much has been revealed about this new title yet, but we know it’s already playable as of 2023. Rumors have already confirmed that development is well underway for this sequel to 2019’s Metro Exodus.
The Metro games are based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s book series and have improved players since their debut with Metro 2033. Following up with titles like Last Light and, most recently, Exodus, fans are excited for what’s coming next. It’s often compared to “Fallout in Russia,” but trust me when I say it leans way more toward horror than anything Bethesda dishes out.
A recent blog post from 4A Games marked the franchise’s 15th anniversary and reflected how real-life events have influenced their storytelling. They shared some heavy thoughts on how the Russian invasion of Ukraine reshaped their narrative direction:
“As we said in our last studio update, in 2022 a full-scale Russian invasion changed how we wanted to tell the story of the next Metro game. As art became life for many of our developers in Ukraine, we drew from that lived experience to create an even darker story…”
“…the themes already present in Metro becoming ever-more apparent and important.”
It reflects the struggles faced by those living through conflict today. The team highlighted themes like power struggles and tyranny, which resonate sincerely given current events.
Dmitry Glukhovsky himself remains involved as a co-creator despite facing serious consequences for his outspoken views against the war:
“Dmitry has always spoken out against the war in Ukraine from the start – a courageous decision for any Russian… We are proud to have him as a friend and co-creator as we tell this next chapter together.”
There is no word yet on when this new title will hit shelves or what it will look like, but if you’re anything like me, you must be excited about what’s coming next. What will they bring us next?
