Metal Gear Solid 4 loses its PlayStation props on Nintendo Switch

The Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions replace the DualShock 3 and PSP with generic devices, while a Kerotan frog takes the PS3 console's place.

Metal Gear Solid 4 has finally moved beyond its PS3-only history, but the Nintendo versions in Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 2 make a few visual changes. Players on Switch 1 and Switch 2 will not see the PlayStation hardware that was woven into several of the game’s scenes.

Before this week’s collection release, Metal Gear Solid 4 had been a PS3 exclusive. Its world was filled with very specific hardware references, including a PS3 on Snake and Otacon’s plane, Sunny playing a PSP, and Snake using a DualShock 3 controller to operate Metal Gear Mk. 2. Otacon even had a memorable speech about the PS3 and Blu-Ray discs.

The Nintendo versions replace those devices with generic alternatives. Sunny’s PSP is now an unbranded handheld, and the controller used with Metal Gear Mk. 2 no longer resembles a DualShock. The PS3 on the plane is replaced by a Kerotan frog from Metal Gear Solid 3, which is certainly one way to make the scene feel less like a Sony showcase.

The change to Sunny’s handheld was also documented in an August 27 post.

Players on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC will still see the PlayStation consoles and controller. That makes the edits specific to the Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions rather than a change across the entire collection.

The Nintendo edits go beyond one console

Konami had already changed the famous PS3 and Blu-Ray line so it could refer to the platform being used. Before launch, an image in the game’s online manual also appeared to remove the PS3 from Snake’s plane before being changed to show the console again. The finished Nintendo versions now confirm that the in-game model itself was changed.

Konami has not publicly explained why the PlayStation references were removed. Since the PC and Xbox versions retain the original hardware, some fans have inferred that the Nintendo release had to make the change, but that explanation remains unconfirmed. The PlayStation seen in the first Metal Gear Solid collection is still present in its Switch version, although it appears in a very low-poly form.

The replacements do not alter the story, but they do remove a bit of the visual identity that made Metal Gear Solid 4 so closely tied to the PS3 era. Tell us what you think in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
