Marvel’s Wolverine Developers Explain How Logan’s Humanity Shapes His Rage

Insomniac's creative team also detailed the PS5 game's grounded combat, tactical Battle Reborn suit, and conflict-heavy Team X.

Marvel’s Wolverine will put Logan’s humanity at the center of its violence when it arrives on PS5 on September 15. Insomniac Games’ creative team described a version of the character built around close-range combat, messy destruction, difficult relationships, and a rage that comes from watching vulnerable mutants suffer.

PlayStation’s Sept. 14 interview with Insomniac’s creative team featured creative director Marcus Smith, game director Mike Daly, senior art director Grant Hollis, senior animation director Brian Wyser, and narrative director Walt Williams. Together, they explained how the team separated Logan from Insomniac’s versions of Peter Parker and Miles Morales while building a Wolverine who feels dangerous, damaged, and deeply human.

Logan’s rage starts with his empathy

Smith said the team could not simply carry over the design philosophy from Marvel’s Spider-Man. Spider-Man’s identity is tied to New York and an open-world structure, while Wolverine’s world is closer, more physical, and more focused on direct contact with the environment.

Hollis identified Wolverine’s claws and combat as the foundation of his design. The team viewed Logan as “a tank” who is messier and clumsier than a polished superhero, someone who breaks more objects and leaves more damage behind. Blood, destruction, and visible damage were meant to affect both Logan and the enemies caught in his path.

Williams connected that physicality to Liam McIntyre’s performance as Logan. The actor had to move between animalistic fury and a gentler side, giving the character an emotional tension that reaches beyond the action. Logan’s anger is not presented as random violence. It comes from a deep well of feeling, especially when the people he wants to protect are treated as experiments and discarded.

Daly said games can make players feel that conflict directly instead of only watching it unfold in a cinematic. Earlier hands-on coverage detailed the game’s three-tier rage system, which lets players use Logan’s anger for survivability, resilience, or greater offensive power.

Battle Reborn gives Wolverine a tactical look

Insomniac’s Battle Reborn suit grew from a mix of comic-book influences and practical equipment. Hollis said the team considered the brown and yellow colors from the 1980s, along with the yellow and blue design that included a touch of red, before settling on a version with more black than brown.

Grounding the story also meant grounding the costume. The team drew from military clothing, body armor, and motorcycle gear to make the suit feel like something a person could realistically build. Its bright yellow elements preserve Wolverine’s familiar identity, while the darker tactical details fit the lived-in world Insomniac wanted to create.

Team X keeps Logan surrounded by conflict

Smith described Logan as an introvert who would rather stay in his cabin than spend time in a crowded group. Team X gives him the opposite of that quiet life, surrounding him with allies whose personalities and goals constantly rub against his own.

Sabretooth and Logan share an animalistic nature and a history as brothers-in-arms, but Sabretooth also feels abandoned by Logan. Mystique found a sense of safety and purpose within Team X, then embraced life as a traveling soldier, assassin, and freedom fighter. Jean Grey connects with Logan through their shared obligation to protect vulnerable people, even when their methods differ.

Enemies were chosen to challenge Wolverine in ways that fit both the story and his abilities. Reavers bring cyborg bodies, heavy equipment, and endurance to the fight, while The Hand combines ancient combat training with deadly weapons. Both groups can credibly threaten Logan without making him feel weaker than the character the team set out to build.

Wolverine moves like a trained brawler

Wyser said Wolverine’s animation grew from the idea that Logan is trained in every martial art but still fights like a brawler. He can tear through groups of enemies, throw caution aside when necessary, and bring an animal quality to his movement.

An early animation test of Wolverine fighting in the snow became a reference point for the team. That work helped establish which parts of his movement felt right, including a quadrupedal stride as Logan begins to run through the world. Sabretooth, by comparison, fights like a wrecking ball who acts before thinking.

Williams said the team wants players to finish Marvel’s Wolverine with empathy for Logan’s suffering, losses, and sacrifices. The goal is for the visceral action to share space with an understanding of the man behind the claws when the PS5 game arrives on September 15.
