KOTOR remake is still in development, Saber boss confirms

Saber Interactive’s chief creative officer Tim Willits confirmed the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is still in development, telling IGN, “Yes, it is still in development.” Willits declined to expand on the comment or address the long-running questions about the project’s production.
The remake was first announced in 2021. Developer Aspyr, which built well-regarded ports and remasters of both KOTOR games for mobile and Switch, originally handled the project. Aspyr is better known for porting than building full new releases from the ground up.
A 2022 Bloomberg report indicated development ran into trouble at Aspyr and that work had shifted to another studio inside Saber Interactive. Later, after Aspyr faced a lawsuit over missing DLC for its KOTOR II port, Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly said in a deposition that the remake had moved to Mad Head Games. Mad Head is also working on other licensed projects, and its official site states the studio is developing an unannounced AAA title based on a well-known IP.
Reilly also discussed plans for a KOTOR II remake, saying the intention was to preserve the story, characters, and general content while rebuilding the game for modern hardware with updated visuals and modernized gameplay. That KOTOR II reimagining was described as still being in the planning stages.
Separately, Lucasfilm and partners revealed a new original single-player Star Wars game at The Game Awards last year titled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. That project is a spiritual successor rather than a direct continuation of the KOTOR games and is being led by original BioWare director Casey Hudson; Casey Hudson is directing the new title.
For now, Willits’ statement to IGN is the only fresh official confirmation that the KOTOR remake exists and remains under development. Beyond that line, no release window, platforms, or developer credits have been publicly confirmed.
