Inner Circle opened BLAST Open Porto with a 2-0 victory over Vitality on August 27, winning Anubis 13-8 and Cache 16-13. The result sent the Ukrainian team into the upper bracket and left Vitality facing the lower bracket after its first Group B match.
Viktor “onic” Babii said Inner Circle’s composure made the difference in the upset. “Today we were just mentally much, much stronger. I’m just proud of my guys,” he said in the full post-match interview. Inner Circle entered the series as clear underdogs, making the LAN win valuable experience for a young roster still finding its level against established teams.
The matchup had already been set when the BLAST Porto bracket was announced, but the result still carried extra weight for Vitality. It was Justinas “jL” Lekavicius‘s first match with the team, as he temporarily replaced William “mezii” Merriman, who began paternity leave for the event. Captain Dan “apEX” Madesclaire was also expected to miss time for the same reason, leaving Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut and the rest of the lineup with little room for error in Porto.
jL’s temporary assignment will continue into PGL Masters Bucharest, where he will substitute for apEX. Vitality’s stand-in plans were announced earlier this month in the team’s BLAST Porto and Bucharest roster update.
Inner Circle control Anubis from the opening rounds
Inner Circle chose Anubis and immediately took control on the attack. A 7-1 lead gave the team room to absorb Vitality’s response, which cut the gap to 7-5 before the side switch.
ZywOo struggled early, reaching a 0/7 K/D before halftime, while Inner Circle’s aggressive CT-side play kept Vitality from building momentum. The Ukrainians took five of the first six rounds after the switch, reached map point, and closed the opener three rounds later at 13-8. Arseniy “cptkurtka023” Derevinskiy led the way with a 1.64 rating on the map.
The BLAST broadcast also captured cptkurtka023 completing a 1v2 retake clutch during the series.
Vitality lose control of their Cache advantage
Vitality picked Cache and started with six straight attacking rounds to build a 6-0 lead. Inner Circle answered with a six-round run of its own, using repeated retakes to send the teams into halftime tied at 6-6.
Vitality looked ready to force a third map after winning six of the first seven rounds on the CT side. The advantage put the team at map point at 12-7, but Inner Circle kept chipping away until the score reached 12-12 and forced overtime.
With Inner Circle trailing 7-12, its tactical pauses had already been used. onic tried to call another pause in chat, only realizing at the last second that the team had none left. As freeze time ended, he called a fast round instead. Vitality was not ready for the sudden pace, and Inner Circle won the round, changing the team’s energy and restoring its belief in the comeback.
onic connected that resilience to the mental strength Inner Circle showed during its Super DraculaN title run before the player break. The comeback continued as Headtr1ck and cptkurtka023 led the recovery, before two fast A-site entries from Eduard “zeRRoFIX” Petrovskyi gave Inner Circle the lead at the start of overtime. The team won two of the first three extra rounds before finishing the map on defense, taking Cache 16-13 and the series 2-0.
cptkurtka023 finished as the series’ top performer with a 1.58 rating. The win also delivered about 80 VRS points, giving Inner Circle a stronger route toward the Major. Its next opponent will come from the MOUZ versus 9z match.

Inner Circle keep expectations in check
onic does not want the roster carrying heavy expectations into its next matches. Porto is Inner Circle’s first tier-one tournament against so many established teams, and he said the players should appreciate the opportunity, gain experience, and keep fighting through the final round regardless of the result.
The lineup has been together long enough to build form, but onic believes it still needs more discipline and a better understanding of the game. Nobody on the team is considering changes, and he believes the current roster can develop into a stable top-10 VRS team.
Vitality now face a difficult route forward
The defeat added to a rough stretch for Vitality. The roster missed the BLAST Bounty Season 2 Finals after losing in the online stage to Team Liquid, then fell to Team Spirit at the Esports World Cup. Spirit went on to win that tournament.
The Esports World Cup was also the last event where Vitality’s usual five players competed together for the foreseeable future. With mezii and apEX both away, the team must collect results with jL in the lineup while also protecting its position in the Valve Regional Standings.
Vitality are trying to secure a Stage 3 invitation to the PGL Singapore Major, which is scheduled for November and December. VRS points decay quickly, so the team’s place in that stage is not guaranteed.
The next challenge will come against the loser of MOUZ versus 9z in the lower bracket. Vitality now need a perfect run through that side of the bracket to reach the six-team playoffs at Porto’s Super Bock Arena.
After the match, jL reflected on finally playing alongside two of the players he admired most. “I looked up to 3 players in my life, s1mple, ZywOo and ropz. I’ve played with s1mple, and now have the chance to play with ZywOo and ropz,” he said in a BLAST Premier interview shared after the loss.
