
Intel may not be finished with the LGA 1700 platform after all. Robert Hallock, the company’s vice president and general manager of its Enthusiast Business, said Intel wants to keep supporting Raptor Lake products for years to come, giving DDR4-based gaming PCs more room to breathe.
Speaking to Tom’s Hardware in an interview, Hallock said, “Going forward, 10nm products like Raptor Lake; that is a core part of the portfolio that I want to offer to people for years to come.”
He later connected that position directly to continued demand for DDR4. “LGA 1700 is still a good socket. Lots of people [are] still interested in DDR4, so [we’ll] keep offering, and you’ll see [pricing] smooth out over time. It’ll come back to normal. That’s the plan.”
Why LGA 1700 still has a place for DDR4 builders
Raptor Lake processors can be used with motherboards built around either DDR4 or DDR5. The memory standard depends on the motherboard, but that split gave PC builders a way to upgrade their processor while keeping an existing DDR4 kit instead of replacing every major component at once.
That option has become more appealing as memory prices remain under pressure. Prices for both DDR4 and DDR5 have risen sharply over the past year, while a 32GB DDR4 kit can still cost around $200. A move to a newer platform can require a new motherboard, processor, and memory, while an LGA 1700 system may let an owner keep the RAM already installed. Prebuilt manufacturers can also pair the platform with newer graphics cards and SSDs without passing the full cost of a DDR5 transition on to buyers.
Hallock said the sudden return of interest caught Intel off guard. Customers were looking for the fastest hardware available at a lower price, bringing Alder Lake and Raptor Lake parts back into focus. Because processor production has to be planned well before demand changes, Intel had not expected such a sudden rush toward the older chips.
LGA 1700 has already hosted Intel’s 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation desktop processors. Intel’s usual socket cycle has often meant a new motherboard after two or three CPU generations, with Arrow Lake later moving to the LGA 1851 socket. Hallock’s comments suggest the company wants to give the older platform a longer run instead of treating it as finished business.
There is an important limit to the news: Intel has not announced a specific new Raptor Lake processor, release date, or detailed compatibility plan. For now, Hallock’s remarks are a statement of intent rather than a product launch. Still, the message gives current LGA 1700 owners a reason to wait before replacing a perfectly usable DDR4 motherboard.
