Season 11 of Diablo 4, Season of Divine Intervention, launched on December 11, 2025 and changes how final item progression works by adding a Masterwork Capstone and a Sanctification step that permanently locks gear.
Masterwork Capstone
Masterworking still requires raising an item to 25/25 quality, but there is now an extra action, the Masterwork Capstone. After reaching 25/25 quality, players must click the capstone button in the Masterwork UI to apply a bonus affix. The UI does not clearly flip to a different state after application, so clicking the masterwork button again will reroll that Capstone affix and consume resources.
Sanctification basics
Sanctifying an item locks it fully. Anything that should be added to that item, including imprints, enchants, aspects, and sockets, must be completed before sanctifying. Once sanctified, players cannot reroll, temper, or add new sockets. The only change allowed afterward is swapping gems in sockets that were already present when the item was sanctified.
There are timing differences depending on level. Below level 60, sanctification access can require special portals that appear after boss kills, and players get only a few free attempts before reaching the endgame. At level 60 and above, bosses and seasonal rewards begin to drop Heavenly Sigils, which can be used for additional sanctifications.
Checklist to avoid costly mistakes
- Do all tempering and imprints first, then add sockets and enchants, then raise quality to 25/25, then apply the Capstone, then sanctify.
- Confirm sockets before sanctifying. Adding or missing a socket is often the most expensive mistake.
- Check General Affixes and roll outcomes before committing. Some affixes change how a build performs more than numbers alone do.
- Apply the Capstone only once if satisfied with the affix. Clicking the masterwork button again will reroll the Capstone and cost materials.
- Use a checklist when upgrading multiple items to avoid skipping steps across a set.
Common pitfalls players report
Players have shared examples of leaving items unfinished, sanctifying too early, or rerolling Capstone affixes by mistake. A reported Reddit thread collects several of those stories and is a useful reference when deciding how conservative to be with scarce materials.

For a broader look at how Season 11 changed item progression, including Tempering and Masterworking system rewrites, see this coverage of how Season 11 rewrote item systems. The safest approach is to do everything you want on an item before clicking sanctify, and to treat the Capstone application as a separate, deliberate step. That habit will save time and resources while players adapt to the new progression flow in Season 11.
