Hearts of Iron IV Asks Players How the Great Depression Should Work

The development team is asking whether countries should simply remove the crisis penalty or turn economic hardship into a longer-term strategic choice.

Hearts of Iron IV is taking another look at one of its most familiar economic obstacles, the Great Depression. A new Steam Dev Corner from content designer ImaginedPanda asks players whether the crisis should remain a National Spirit cleared through focuses or become a broader strategic problem with more than one way to handle it.

The Great Depression already appears in different countries because its effects reached far beyond one national campaign. The current approach usually reduces it to negative modifiers, then asks players to spend focus time removing them. The team is now considering whether economic problems should appear through other parts of the game instead of being handled almost entirely by the focus tree.

Players could choose how to respond

The feedback request centers on two very different approaches. Some players may prefer to eliminate the Depression as quickly as possible, while others could accept the early setback if leaning into the problem creates a better reward later. That would give economic hardship more room to influence a campaign instead of treating it as a penalty that every country simply works to erase.

The discussion fits alongside recent economic-system proposals, including the Industrial Parks proposal, which also looked at ways to give production and national development more local character. For the Great Depression, however, the team has not confirmed a replacement system, specific effects, or a release date.

For now, the Dev Corner is a request for ideas rather than a promise of a future rework. Would you rather remove the Great Depression quickly or take the risk of turning it into a longer-term economic opportunity?
