Half-Life 2’s Route Kanal puzzle was rougher back in the day

Ocelot's comparison video shows the buoyancy section now plays much more cleanly, while older builds made the floating debris harder to use.

Half-Life 2‘s Route Kanal puzzle was a little nastier in its earlier builds, and a new comparison video makes that easy to see.

The clip comes from YouTuber Ocelot, who has spent time comparing different releases of games like Silent Hill 3 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica. In the Half-Life 2 footage, the floating debris in the sewer section is much easier to turn into a safe route in the latest build than it was in older versions.

That is only part of the story. Ocelot also points out changes to lighting, fire and blood effects, G-Man’s eyes, cloth shine, and even the fact that the original release did not put chapter titles on screen. Valve later revisited the game again in the huge 20th anniversary update.

The video then moves into the console versions of Half-Life 2 and a rarer Japanese arcade release. That version included multiplayer, a shortened story mode, cutscenes, and glowing arrows that pointed players forward, which is a very different setup from the PC game most players know. The video wraps at Black Mesa East, leaving plenty of room for a follow-up.
