Guerrilla’s Next Killzone Project Is Still in Very Early Production

Guerrilla's Horizon multiplayer project is currently the priority after negative feedback led to a reboot, leaving Killzone's schedule unclear.

Killzone is not close to returning, but Guerrilla appears to have a concrete place for it in the studio’s long-term plans. The next project is still in very early production, and the rebooted Horizon multiplayer game remains the immediate priority after negative feedback from a closed beta. Some developers had already been allocated to Killzone, but its schedule remains tied to how quickly Guerrilla can stabilize the Horizon project.

MP1st’s exclusive report says the shooter was intended to become Guerrilla’s next focus after the Horizon title, with part of the team expected to return once the reboot is complete. Guerrilla is also reportedly working with an outside studio on the project. People Can Fly is the leading candidate for that partnership, but the connection remains unconfirmed.

That possibility has some relevant context behind it. In March 2025, People Can Fly and PlayStation agreed to co-develop a game based on an existing PlayStation intellectual property. The agreement did not identify the project, so it offers no direct confirmation that the deal is connected to Killzone.

Current speculation points toward a remake or remaster of an older Killzone entry rather than a confirmed sequel. The 2004 PS2 original is one possibility, but neither that game nor a remake direction has been announced. No release window or platform details have been attached to the project.

People Can Fly’s possible involvement is based partly on Project Delta, a PS5 prototype tied to the PlayStation agreement. The studio has confirmed the prototype, but it has not named the franchise. Its previous work on Bulletstorm, Gears Judgment, and Outriders would also give it relevant shooter experience, although none of those credits establish a connection to Guerrilla’s project.

Why Horizon’s reboot still sets the schedule

Separate reports have described the Horizon reboot as a move away from its original live-service structure toward a smaller co-op game with a dedicated story mode. Guerrilla’s plans were reportedly reworked after the closed beta’s negative response, pulling attention toward the multiplayer project and leaving the next Killzone game in the queue.

Current plans place Horizon 3 after the next Killzone game, although that ordering can change before either project reaches release. The shooter may receive more attention once the Horizon reboot is complete, but the available information does not establish a near-term launch or finalized schedule.

Killzone has been absent since 2013

Killzone has not received a new mainline release since Killzone: Shadow Fall in 2013, and its online servers shut down in August 2022. The franchise received six installments across PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and handheld systems during the nine years after its 2004 debut.

In 2017, Hermen Hulst, who led Guerrilla at the time, said the team still loved Killzone and its universe, although he stopped short of committing to a new game. A new project would revive a dormant Sony shooter series after more than a decade, though its identity and development partner remain unsettled.

For now, the early production status is the only firm near-term takeaway. Guerrilla’s Horizon work will determine when the shooter receives more attention, while the project’s identity, partner, release window, and platform remain unannounced.
