In a recent interview, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, hinted at the upcoming potential for video games to feature visuals that resemble live-action footage. The discussion arises as high hopes build for Grand Theft Auto 6, which promises to set new standards in graphical fidelity.
Zelnick mentioned that while current games like NBA 2K are impressive—“if you squint, looks like real basketball”—there remains a noticeable gap between animation and true realism. He expressed optimism about technology’s ability to bridge this gap sooner than expected. “Technology will get us there, but probably [in] a shorter period of time than maybe even I expect,” he stated during his chat with Bloomberg.
Zelnick has a clear vision regarding the future of video game graphics: “That wouldn’t make any sense creatively, but that will be another tool in our toolkit that’s generated by technology.” He believes we haven’t yet reached the ‘technological asymptote’ seen in movies and television.
This isn’t the first time Zelnick has commented on realistic graphics; back in 2019, before the launch of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, he expressed similar sentiments. While there have been many improvements since then, they still fall short of his expectations for hyper-realistic visuals.
The topic also ties into broader industry trends, as his remarks come amid discussions about potential impacts on console sales due to external factors such as tariffs. Amidst these changes, Zelnick reaffirmed his support for single-player experiences despite the growing popularity of multiplayer options.
