GTA 6’s Map Will Be Roughly 3 Times the Size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s
The reported comparison also puts GTA 6's full world at twice GTA 5's size, while Vice City and its surrounding areas are described as 11 times larger than Los Santos and its surroundings.

On August 27, Rockstar Games confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will have a map roughly 3 times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s. The scale comparison arrived alongside the game’s latest extended look, giving players the clearest indication yet of how large Rockstar’s next open world will be.
A New York Times report tied the size estimate to Rockstar’s comments. The figure is still a broad comparison rather than a detailed measurement, but it places GTA 6 well beyond the already massive world of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Additional context came from YouTuber and streamer TGG, who said he had visited Rockstar North and seen three hours of the game before asking the studio about its size. His map comparison also put the full GTA 6 world at twice the size of GTA 5’s, rather than limiting the figure to the central city.
Vice City is only part of the comparison
TGG also separated Vice City from the surrounding regions. Vice City itself was described as twice the size of Los Santos. Once its surrounding suburbs are included, the combined area would be 11 times larger than Los Santos and its surrounding areas.
The Red Dead Redemption 2 comparison is harder to picture in practical terms. Its world can feel larger during play because travel takes longer and the environment is packed more densely. Rockstar has not provided a full area measurement, and these ratios do not show how much content each area will contain or how the world will feel to cross.
GTA 6’s map is aiming for density as well as size
Raw square mileage is only one way to compare open worlds. No Man’s Sky and The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall already offer much larger spaces, but those games rely on procedural generation and contain broad stretches between major hubs. GTA 6 is being presented differently, with its satirized and fictional version of Miami, Florida, appearing packed with things to do and systems to interact with.
That approach also fits comments from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson. He has described a world where players can find rewards by spending time away from objectives, blips, and map icons.
The map’s size does not necessarily mean the main story will take hundreds of hours. Nelson’s playthrough of the main campaign took about 80 hours, offering a rough reference for players who stick closely to the central path. Those who spend more time finding side activities and unexpected encounters may have a much longer trip ahead of them.
Even with the measurement caveat, a world at this scale would give GTA 6 plenty of room for the dense, unpredictable setting Rockstar has been describing.
