GTA 6’s Japanese Download Codes Come With a 170-Day Timer

The restriction applies to PS5 code-in-a-box releases in Japan, while Xbox download codes are not subject to the same regional limit.

Japanese players who buy a boxed download code for Grand Theft Auto VI will have 170 days after the game’s launch to redeem it. The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, meaning the restriction will affect physical-style code purchases from day one.

The expiration rule comes from regional regulations and is listed on Rockstar’s GTA 6 support page, which covers the game’s platforms, editions, and versions. The page also says pre-loading will begin on November 12, 2026.

Japan’s restriction applies to PS5

The 170-day limit is specific to the PS5 version in Japan. Xbox download codes are not region-locked and will not face the same expiration policy, according to the listed platform details.

Japan is also the only region identified as having download codes that expire so soon after release. That matters because GTA 6 will not have a traditional disc release at launch. Instead, the code-in-a-box edition is expected to be the physical option available to buyers.

The policy has already drawn criticism from players. One user said the situation showed why physical media still matters in a post on X, while another made the same point in a separate post about physical ownership.

Despite the concerns around the release format, GTA 6’s commercial momentum remains strong. The game is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and pre-orders have reportedly been tracking toward a very large opening week.

For Japanese PS5 buyers, the key detail is simple: a boxed code will not remain redeemable indefinitely. Anyone who purchases one will need to activate it within the 170-day window after launch.
