Grand Theft Auto VI download codes for PS5 will require a regional match between the code and the player’s platform account. Xbox codes will not have the same restriction, according to Rockstar Support.
The policy matters because players who purchase a PS5 code from another region may be unable to activate it. Rockstar advises PlayStation customers to buy from a retailer located in the same country as their platform account to avoid activation problems.
GTA 6’s boxed PS5 editions use download codes rather than physical discs, so the regional restriction can affect players even when they purchase what appears to be a traditional retail release. The issue is especially significant in countries where PlayStation Network is not officially supported. Players there may resort to creating an account registered in another region, but that is an unofficial workaround and may conflict with Sony’s terms.
PS5 Codes Must Match the Account Region
Rockstar’s support information divides the redemption rules into several regional groups. A code purchased in one of these markets can only be used with a PlayStation account registered in the matching countries:
- Brazil: Brazil
- LATAM: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay
- North America: Canada and the United States
- Korea: South Korea
- Japan: Japan
- United Kingdom: United Kingdom
- Saudi Arabia & UAE: Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates
- Rest of Asia: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand
- Rest of EMEA and Asia: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine
Japan has an extra condition. Product codes issued there will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which is tied to Grand Theft Auto VI‘s scheduled launch on November 19, 2026. That same Japanese expiration rule was also detailed in a recent report about GTA 6’s Japanese download codes.
Xbox Codes Will Not Have the Same Lock
Rockstar’s platform details state that Xbox codes are not region-locked. That gives Xbox buyers more flexibility when purchasing a code outside the region tied to their account, while PS5 buyers will need to check the retailer’s market before completing the purchase.
With the game scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, the regional rules will be especially important for anyone considering an imported code or a purchase from an online retailer based in another country. For PS5 players, checking the code’s region before buying is essential, particularly if the retailer is selling a boxed edition from another market.
