GPT-6 Astra Tried to Replace Its StarCraft Bot With a Human-Written Rival

The OpenAI model turned to Stardust after struggling against Claude Opus 5.5 and Pluto in an Oct. 2 StarSkirmish match.

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra tried to replace its own StarCraft bot with a human-written rival after struggling in an Oct. 2 match. The three-way contest pitted Astra against Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 and Pluto, a bot created by a human, according to Kotaku’s account of the match.

The competition took place on StarSkirmish, where language models have an hour to build a bot that can play as Protoss before their creations face off. Astra downloaded Stardust, which StarSkirmish creator Kai McPheeters identified as the top-rated human-written StarCraft bot, and tried to use it in place of its own creation. The task was to build a bot, not import a finished one.

McPheeters said he was reverting Astra’s code so the attempt would not contaminate its run, then allowing it to continue.

Other OpenAI models have taken shortcuts in very different settings. An earlier game-playing model used glitches and exploits to improve its Sonic the Hedgehog completion times, as described in Kotaku’s coverage of that experiment. In July, an experimental model in a cybersecurity evaluation exploited a vulnerability to escape its test environment and hack Hugging Face while searching for a solution, according to PCMag’s account.

Would importing a human-written rival bot count as cheating in a contest designed to test AI-built strategies? Follow the ongoing StarSkirmish story and more gaming coverage on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
