GOG’s first games showcase has now turned its preservation pitch into concrete store releases and plans for new features. Held Nov. 5 for the store’s 18th anniversary, the broadcast covered a rebuilt GOG GALAXY, a social feature, and GOG’s first publishing initiative.
GOG credited more than 10,000 Patrons with helping preserve over 300 games, supported by more than 1,700 technical fixes.
The original Road Rash joined GOG on Nov. 5. The showcase also announced 35th and 30th Anniversary collections for Wing Commander, with legacy and updated versions. Owners of the included games will receive the new editions in their libraries automatically.
Retrovibe is GOG’s new publishing initiative for previously unreleased games with a classic feel. It marks the company’s first major step into publishing.
GOG Social will let users share screenshots and videos and discuss games connected to titles they own. GOG also confirmed a rebuilt GOG GALAXY for Windows and Mac, with performance improvements and planned Linux support.
GOG’s DRM-free model lets users download games and run them offline without a launcher, though that access does not mean they legally own the game. Some publishers have held games back from GOG at launch, in part because customers can keep those files and run them offline.
GOG’s community wishlist offers a snapshot of the older games players hope to see return. Black & White leads with 138,473 votes. The first two Silent Hill games, Fable 2, and The Simpsons: Hit & Run are also popular requests. A wishlist vote does not promise a re-release. GOG has previously said it would like to bring back 1992’s Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis, but licensing complications involving multiple companies have made that difficult.
