Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon 25th-anniversary celebration is giving fans a sizeable reason to return to its older games. November 13 will mark 25 years since the franchise began, but on August 6, Ghost Recon Wildlands received the new Last Rites mission, expanded customization options, visual upgrades, and the permanent return of the Predator mission.
The showcase followed Ubisoft’s earlier confirmation in an earlier Ghost Recon announcement that franchise news would arrive on August 6. Alongside the Wildlands update, PC players can try both recent mainline games for a limited time and claim a classic entry at no cost.
Last Rites sends players after La Llorona
The biggest new addition is Last Rites, a story mission set in Bolivia. The operation takes place four years after the fall of El Sueño and sends players after La Llorona, a cult leader whose violent influence has spread across the region. La Llorona leads the violent cult Los Pentitentes.
La Llorona is presented as a masked antagonist with a dark history tied to revenge against the cartels, the CIA, and La Unidad. Rather than simply tracking another cartel target, players must gather clues and work out how to reach La Llorona. The mission moves through dangerous swamps and dense forests, where low visibility adds another complication to firefights. It puts more weight on stealth, planning, and tactical decisions before the shooting starts. It also serves as another special Ghost Recon operation designed to hint at the franchise’s future. Ubisoft’s official Last Rites announcement describes the scenario as a standalone mission set in a darker version of Bolivia.
Wildlands also restores The Jungle Moved, the Predator bonus mission first added in December 2017. Ubisoft removed it in December 2020 after its license to use the character expired, but the mission now returns permanently with its jungle confrontation against the hunters created by Jim and John Thomas.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint will receive its own 25th Anniversary Bundle in September rather than the comparable visual update coming to Wildlands. Ubisoft plans to include free weapons, accessories, and vehicles in that package, including items such as the M4A1 Tactical Brown, Wolf Enhanced Helmet, and Opheis Mk.II Hunter.
Wildlands gets 4K, 60 FPS, and deeper settings
The update also gives Wildlands a long-requested technical pass. Players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC can now play at 4K and 60 FPS, while both console and PC versions receive improvements to lighting, shadows, and distance rendering.
Wildlands’ gameplay settings are more flexible as well. Players can now adjust party composition, reload behavior, primary weapon restrictions, and individual difficulty modifiers instead of choosing between broad arcade-style or hardcore presets. The update also adds options for damage settings, the user interface, weather, and time of day. That makes it possible to build a realistic ruleset without having to use the permadeath Ghost Mode.
Across PvE modes, players can enable authentic reloading and friendly fire, choose whether to carry one or two weapons under the Ghost Mode ruleset, and adjust several difficulty presets. Additional options can remove visual and audio assistance, including the glow around highlighted items, the landing preview for throwable equipment, and sounds tied to hidden interface elements such as the detection meter.
The update also makes hundreds of in-game items available for free. The rewards include items that could no longer be obtained, unreleased camouflage patterns, gear previously exclusive to Mercenaries mode, and new 25th-anniversary equipment. PlayStation Plus subscribers also receive exclusive Last Rites items inspired by La Llorona’s masked appearance.
Free access and a Future Soldier giveaway
PC players can try Ghost Recon Wildlands and Ghost Recon Breakpoint for free from August 6 through August 10. A Ubisoft Connect account is required, and each game’s main story takes about 25 hours to complete. Players aiming for a completionist run could spend close to 100 hours with either title.
Players who would rather buy the games can find them at steep discounts on Steam. The platform is offering 95% discounts, bringing Ghost Recon Wildlands down to $2.49 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint down to $3.
Ubisoft Connect users can also permanently redeem Ghost Recon: Future Soldier through August 13. The 2012 game moves the series into a near-future setting while keeping its focus on military operations, with more advanced equipment added to the formula.
Ghost Recon Insider Program sign-ups are open
Ubisoft has also opened registration for the Ghost Recon Insider Program, giving fans a chance to help shape the next game in the series. The sign-up process asks participants to choose Ubisoft Connect, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S, log in, and complete a short survey about their experience with Ghost Recon and the other games they play.
The program does not reveal much about the next Ghost Recon project yet, but it gives participants a way to provide feedback and potentially learn more about the upcoming game early.
