Garry’s Mod is preparing to release its July 2025 update on July 23rd at 3 PM GMT. This update maintains compatibility with existing servers, so players won’t be forced to update their servers immediately, but are encouraged to update to enjoy the new features and fixes.
The developers are inviting players, modders, and server owners to help test the update through beta branches available on Steam. Testing ahead of time should help catch any issues before the official release, which is always a good idea to ensure gameplay remains smooth and bugs are minimal.
You can access the beta versions by switching game branches via Steam. Here’s how you do it:
- Exit Garry’s Mod
- Right-click the game on Steam, select Properties
- Open the Betas tab and pick your branch:
- None – standard public version
- Pre-Release – upcoming July update
- Dev – bleeding edge, likely to have more bugs
For server administrators who want to set up dedicated servers on beta branches, a detailed guide is available on the official wiki page.
The update changelog is still being finalized, but you can preview the current list of changes here: https://wiki.facepunch.com/gmod/Update_Preview_Changelog. Do keep in mind that this list might change before the final release.
Should you find any bugs or issues while testing the beta branches, the developers prefer reports to be submitted on their official GitHub issues page: https://github.com/Facepunch/garrysmod-issues. Alternatively, you can also share your findings in the comments below or on their Discord server: https://discord.com/invite/gmod.
It’s nice to see the community involved so early. Have you tried the beta branches yet? What are you hoping to see in this update?
