Garry’s Mod July 2025 update just dropped, and it’s shaking up how you get content from classic Valve games. Imagine playing on community maps that rely on Counter-Strike: Source or Half-Life 2 Episodic stuff without owning those games. Yeah, that’s happening now.
This update includes most of the assets from Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 Episodic directly in Garry’s Mod. Valve kindly granted permission for this, so you no longer need to install those games to avoid missing textures or models on maps that require that content. It’s a massive quality-of-life win for everyone, especially if you’ve been frustrated by those annoying ERROR signs popping up.
Heads up though, this update doesn’t include the maps from those games themselves, so if you want to play official CS:S or HL2 maps, you’ll still need to own and install those games. Voice lines and music are also missing due to licensing restrictions. So no, you won’t get the full audio experience, but the visuals and models should be there for most cases.
Half-Life 2: Episode 2 content will now be available in the spawn menu for every player by default, which is kind of cool and makes building and modding easier.
Besides this significant change, the update also includes the usual mix of crash fixes, performance enhancements, and improvements for both players and modders. Nothing too wild, but those little things always matter, right?
