Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s Physical Edition Will Require a Download Before It Can Be Played
The Switch 2 version will use a Game-Key Card and list 130 GB of storage, while director Naoki Hamaguchi says the game may be around 200 GB overall and PS5 and Xbox Series X/S requirements remain unconfirmed.
Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation‘s physical edition will require an internet connection and an extra download before it can be played. The decision was made to preserve the RPG’s fidelity and quality rather than compromise the game to fit entirely on physical media, as explained in the game’s physical-edition details.
Storage estimate is becoming clearer. In a VGC interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi was asked whether Revelation would be larger than Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth. “Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200 GB of game,” he said.
At roughly 200 GB, Revelation would be the largest entry in the remake trilogy. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was around 100 GB, while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth reached about 150 GB. Hamaguchi’s figure remains a development estimate, so it should not be treated as the finalized install requirement for every version.
Why the disc will not contain the complete game
Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth each shipped physically on two PlayStation discs, with the launch versions’ game data included before later updates. Revelation will use a single disc or cartridge for its physical releases, which means the package will not contain everything needed to start the game.
Hamaguchi said the development team needed to push the hardware “to a certain extent” while avoiding compromises to the game’s quality. He also said delivering a physical product remained important to the team. Buyers will therefore still receive a boxed copy that can be lent, traded, or sold, but the disc will not provide a complete offline copy on its own.
Certain sections of Revelation will be delivered as downloaded data through the physical release. For PS5 and Xbox Series X, the Square Enix product page includes a clear disclaimer: “An internet connection is required to download additional game data in order to play the physical version of the game.”
Square Enix has not explained how much data will be stored on those discs. It remains unclear whether they will contain a playable portion that the download completes or function mainly as an unlock for a larger digital install. A game that ultimately approaches 200 GB would exceed the capacity of a single 100 GB PS5 disc, meaning a self-contained release would have needed at least two discs, as happened with the earlier entries.
Switch 2 has a more definite setup. Its physical release will use a Game-Key Card like the previous two entries, so the entire game will need to be downloaded. Square Enix lists 130 GB of required storage for that version, while the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S storage requirements have not been confirmed.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027, concluding the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
PlayStation has said it will stop manufacturing discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028, several months after Revelation‘s scheduled launch.
Hamaguchi had previously said Square Enix was still discussing the exact product lineup for Revelation in an earlier interview. The new details confirm that a physical release is coming, while the contents of the PS5 and Xbox discs remain unclear.
